LAVERGNE, Tenn. – A Mt. Juliet woman trying to protect her friend from her ex-husband was stabbed to death Sunday night in LaVergne.

The fatal stabbing happened around 10 p.m. at the ex-wife's home in the 1400 block of Tuffnell Drive.

LaVergne police told Nashville's News 2 Kenny Thomason was trying to get to his ex-wife, who was inside the home.

According to police, Kimberly Kuhlman, of Mt. Juliet, tried to stop Thomason on the front porch and was stabbed in the process.

After the stabbing, Kuhlman was able to call 911 and keep Thomason out of the house and away from his ex-wife until police arrived.

"[Police received a] 911 call from the victim and from that the officers were responding," LaVergne police Lt. Kyle Norrod explained, "and, when they got there, the victim had already been stabbed and the suspect was then attempting to gain entry into the house where the ex-wife was."

Kuhlman, 42, was taken to Stonecrest Medical Center where she later died.

Polices said Thomason, 47, did not appear drunk and showed no remorse for his actions.

Authorities said he has an arrest history involving domestic-related aggravated assault and his ex took out an order of protection against him earlier this year.

Thomason was charged with first degree murder and booked into the Rutherford County jail.

Police said Kuhlman and Thomason had known each for the last 12 years.

She leaves behind a husband and two sons.

Kuhlman's family has set up a fund in her memory to benefit her children.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Kuhlman Family Fund at any Regions Bank branch location.
