FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. – A Lincoln County man pleaded guilty Friday to the murderous rampage two years ago that left his wife, her brother, father, son and one of the son's friends dead.

Jacob Shaffer, 32, received a life sentence for each of the five murder counts against him.

Shaffer stabbed all five victims to death on July 18, 2009 in two homes near Fayetteville, a town of 7,000 people about 90 miles south of Nashville near the Alabama border.

Authorities said Shaffer targeted his estranged wife who he later claimed was unfaithful but killed her father, brother, 16-year-old son and a 16-year-old neighbor first, so they couldn't stop the attack on her.

Shaffer is also charged in the murder of Sidney Wayne Dempsey who died of blunt force trauma a day earlier in Huntsville, Alabama, just over the state line.

His body was found at a business owned by Shaffer's father-in-law.

Shaffer's criminal trial in Tennessee was set to start in September.
