WAVERLY, Tenn. – The charges against a Waverly man shown on officer dash camera video being beaten by Humphreys County Sheriff's deputies have been dropped.
Darrin Ring was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest for the January 23 incident and has spent the last five months behind bars.
District Attorney Dan Alsobrooks, who filed the motion to dismiss the charges, told Nashville's News 2 Tuesday that both charges relating to the January night were dropped.
He said Ring still has DUI and violation of probation charges pending.
Ring's lawyer, David Raybin, said he applauds the decision and will meet with Ring and his legal team to discuss further options regarding whether to press charges against the deputies or the Humphreys County Sheriff's Office.
Ring suffered multiple fractured ribs, a punctured lung and contusions over his body in the incident. The video shows deputies repeatedly hitting him with their batons, punching him with their fists and kicking him.
The video was turned over to the Tennessee Department of Investigation last week.
Tuesday, the Humphreys County Sheriff's Office confirmed it placed the three deputies involved on paid administrative lead pending the outcome of the TBI's investigation.
Sheriff Chris Davis indicted he would cooperate fully with their investigation.
