NEW YORK – An increase in pedestrian deaths over the last year has prompted lawmakers in some states to propose a law that would make it illegal to walk or jog while using an iPod or other electronic musical device.
New York is the most recent state to propose the law under which walkers and joggers could be fined as much as $90 for violations.
Lawmakers in Oregon and Virginia have also proposed similar resolutions.
According to experts, technological equipment, specifically musical devices, prevents walkers and bikers from hearing impeding danger.
Music also takes over the thought process, causing walkers, runners and bikers to tune out their surroundings.
Technological distractions are believed to be directly related to the increase in pedestrian deaths, and, according to a Women's Health Study, injuries become more severe when joggers tune-in to music.
Critics of the proposal wonder how the law would be enforced if passed.
