NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The obesity rate is growing in Tennessee and growing at an alarming rate when compared to the rest of the nation.

According to a recent report from Trust for America's Health, one in three Tennessee adults, or 32%, is at an unhealthy weight.

The number is the fourth highest in the country.

Frightening also is that more than 20% of Tennessee children are obese, the sixth highest rate in the country.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean is trying to lead by example when it comes to the massive problem for many reasons.

"Children who are obese are more likely to have problems with cancer, heart disease, with diabetes it affects the entire quality of their life and length of their life," he explained.

Mayor Dean's Walk 100 Miles with the Mayor challenge wraps up Saturday with a walk through Shelby Park.

A celebration planned for afterward downtown will feature performances by Jo Dee Messina and Melinda Doolittle.
