MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Rutherford County grand jury has indicted Middle Tennessee State University student Shanterrica Madden for the stabbing death of her roommate earlier this year.
The indictment issued July 5 charges Madden, 18, with one count first degree murder and one count tampering with evidence for the March 2 slaying of Tina Stewart, a junior basketball player at the university.
Stewart, who was originally from Memphis, was stabbed following an argument at the Murfreesboro apartment the women shared.
Madden's attorney has maintained his client, also from Memphis, acted in self-defense.
Stewart's parents have filed a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit in the case.
Madden is out of jail on bond. She will be arraigned July 18.
