ATLANTA (AP) - Cole Hamels and three Philadelphia Phillies relievers combined to pitch a no-hitter Monday, beating the Atlanta Braves 7-0 and giving a last-place team a rare reason to celebrate. Hamels was pulled after six innings and seemed fine with the decision. He struck out seven, walked five, hit a batter and threw 108 pitches.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama still has competition for the starting job at quarterback. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban says both Blake Sims and Jake Coker will play Saturday against Florida Atlantic. He says he hasn't determined how the rotation will work for No. 2 Alabama.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Panthers quarterback Cam Newton returned to the practice field wearing an oversized flak jacket designed to provide added protection for his fractured ribs. Newton smiled and even stopped to pose for a picture Monday with his newly enhanced armor before walking into practice, throwing passes and going through drills as normal.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - An offseason spent pushing the defense to force turnovers paid off in No. 23 North Carolina's season-opening victory. Now the Tar Heels must prove those defensive improvements were something more than just a one-time burst against a lower-division opponent, starting Saturday night against San Diego State.
