CINCINNATI (AP) - Doug Fister took advantage of facing the slumping Cincinnati Reds to extend the best season-opening start by any Washington pitcher in a 4-0 Nationals' win Sunday. Fister allowed just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in seven shutout innings to reach 10 wins in 14 starts, one fewer than any previous Washington pitcher.
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Big Macher won the $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes by a half-length Sunday at Del Mar. Ridden by Tyler Baze, Big Macher ran six furlongs in 1:08.82 and paid $21.20, $6.20 and $4.40. Big Macher won in his return from a layoff since April because of a quarter crack in his foot.
OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) - Bayern won the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Sunday at Monmouth Park, extending trainer Bob Baffert's record for victories in the 3-year-old stakes to seven. Bayern was the dominant front running winner, pulling away by 7 1/4 lengths over Albano.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Former Carolina Panthers and Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Travelle Wharton is retiring after 10 NFL seasons. There will be a retirement news conference Tuesday at Wofford College, where the Panthers are training. He's the fourth Panthers offensive lineman to retire this offseason.
