FT. CAMPBELL, Ky. – An injured Fort Campbell soldier was greeted by hundreds of friends, family members and strangers as he returned home on Saturday. Staff Sergeant Charles "Chaz" Allen lost both of his legs in an explosion while serving in Afghanistan on January 22.Allen has undergone months of treatment and physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after he received two prosthetic legs. As the injured hero emerged from the plane early Saturday, the crowds cheered and waved signs in support and honor. "We are in total surprise and shock at the amount of people that have turned out for this event,"Allen's father told Nashville's News 2.Staff Sergeant Allen said the last few months have been difficult but he is grateful for the support of his family and friends. "I've gotten where I have made friends along the way. It's really hard to think of all I have been through," he said, adding, "I'm glad it was just me and not anybody else." Tears of joy, sorrow and pride were all shed as Allen, alongside his wife and daughters walked through his line of supporters. "I know this will resonate with him and help his healing even more knowing how many people are behind him," wife Stephanie Allen said.
Sunday, Valentino's Italian Ristorante is hosting a benefit dinner and silent auction at Bella Napoli Pizzeria, located next to Taco Mamacita in Edgehill Village.
The money raised will help the family build a single story home, which will allow Allen to move around easily.
Donations can also be made at Heritage Bank located at 3845 Trenton Road in Clarksville.
