NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Metro Police Department is working to create plans that make intersections in Nashville prone to crime and crashes safer for drivers.
Trends tabulated using the department's reporting system and database allow Metro to use a data-driven approach to identifying the most dangerous intersections.
They looked at the amount of accidents that occurred closest to certain intersections, as well as intersections with frequent reports of criminal activity.
Nolensville Pike and Welshwood Drive topped the list. It had 55 crimes happen nearby in the last 12 weeks.
The second busiest intersection, Linbar Drive and Wallace Road, had a combined total of 27 violence and property crimes.
Combined with accident reports in the same areas, it alerts officials as to which intersections need more patrols and more officers.
Based on the numbers, Nolensville Pike proves to be a dangerous strip, especially at Old Hickory Boulevard where 33 crashes have been reported in the last 12 weeks.
The intersection at Harding Place had only six fewer.
The results of the approach have proven to be somewhat effective in the past. Although some of the same intersections continued to show up in the reports, the numbers were fewer.
South Precinct Commander Mike Alexander spearheaded the initiative and has been recognized by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration for his efforts.
His work is also helping other departments nationwide.
