Rising fuel, airfare costs not affecting summer travel plans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite high air fare and rising fuel costs many people across the country and Mid-State are still planning to take a much needed vacation this summer.

According to a new USA Today Gallup poll, six in 10 Americans said that going on vacation is extremely important.

Cynthia Kear is a travel agent with Belle Meade Vacations.

She told Nashville's News 2 there are many deals for travelers to take advantage of during the upcoming summer months.

"The biggest deal is Mexico. People are afraid to go to Cancun, and they shouldn't be, it's perfectly fine," she explained.

Those travelers not wanting to leave the country this summer, Kear said the cheapest flights from Music City are to New York City, Florida and the west coast.

"California is great. The coastal areas with all their hotels, they are running specials," she said.

Another option that the local travel agent offers to travelers this summer is going on a cruise, where trips to the Caribbean to Alaska are also priced at a bargain.

According to travel experts, travelers are likely to save the most money by postponing summer travel until later in the season after students have started back to school.
