H.S. students rewarded, ticketed for driving efforts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Local high school student drivers were rewarded or ticketed for their driving efforts early Wednesday morning.

Every student driver that arrived in the parking lot of Glencliff High School Wednesday morning was ‘ticketed' by members of the Freshmen Leadership Team.

Wendooy Molina is a member of the leadership team, which is a group of students too young to drive, but old enough to encourage safe driving.

"We're looking to see if people are buckled up," Wendooy Molina explained.

For students wearing their seatbelts, they were rewarded with Smarties candy for their wise choice and the opportunity to win cash prizes.

"They get a chance to win $100, $50 or $10," freshman Christian Vonsamphanh said.

Students found not wearing their seatbelts when arriving to school were also given candy, along with some wise advice from students that are too young to drive.

"We give [those not wearing their seatbelt] a lollipop. It's a Dum-Dum, and we tell them to make better choices," Molina said.

Members of the school's leadership team hoped that once all the candy and prizes were handed out, the message will click with all fellow students that are old enough to get behind the wheel.

"Since we're in a community high school, us teenagers need to be responsible as well," Molina told Nashville's News 2.

Out of the 86 tickets given out Wednesday morning, 79 of the students were buckled up.

The safety demonstration was supported by the Office of Highway Safety and State Farm Insurance.
