Fitness expert, Leah Murtaugh said that everyone needs to exercise.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Obesity Task Force met on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to help promote health and wellness throughout the state.
According to Leah Murtaugh, a fitness expert at a local YMCA, Tennessee ranks in the top fattest states across the nation.
Recent state health department figures recently found nearly 50% of Tennessee children and 69% of adults are obese.
On Wednesday, Murtaugh taught legislative staffers, Vanderbilt medical student and politicians about simple exercises.
"The more fit we are as a state, the fewer health insurance costs we have, the less absenteeism we have, the less chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer," Murtaugh explained.
State Senator Doug Overby and State Representative Mike Turner both attended the meeting at the State Capitol about sneaking fitness routines into busy schedules.
"Everyone in this state needs to exercise…," Murtaugh told Nashville's News 2.
