COLUMBIA, Tenn. – The wife of a Columbia Marine killed last month in the line of duty has given birth to their son.
Crissie Carpenter and Lance Cpl. Andrew Carpenter's son, Landon, was born at 2:44 a.m. Friday in Nashville.
"We were all very excited, but at the same time, really wishing that Andy was going to be there. She has a spitting image of Andy right there," Landon's aunt Cassie Ponder said.
She continued, "He's going to know his dad now, until the end of his days."
Carpenter, 27, was shot in the neck while on patrol in the Helmand province, Afghanistan on Valentine's Day.
He died in a military hospital in Germany five days later after doctors declared him brain dead and family members decided to take him off life support.
Crissie Carpenter, 22, said she planned to tell her son his father was a hero and he would see that for himself when he gets older.
"Andy's not only mine and Landon's hero, but he's everybody's," she said.
Both mother and son are said to be doing well.
Cindy Carpenter is the fallen Marine's mother.
"Baby Landon is just beautiful. He looks just like our Andrew," she said.
A comedy show has been scheduled to benefit the family on Saturday night at American Legion on Nashville Highway in Columbia.
The show will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with all proceeds going to Landon's Fund.
Donations to Landon's Fund can also be made at any Mid-State Regions Bank.
