Mosque opponents lose effort to get 31,000 emails

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Opponents of a mosque in Murfreesboro have lost an effort to get a judge to release 31,000 emails sent among three Rutherford County officials.

Opponents believe the officials secretly approved a building permit for the mosque.

Chancellor Robert Corlew III on Wednesday denied the request but said plaintiff's attorney Joe Brandon could proceed further by narrowing his request.

According to published reports, county attorney Josh McReary said the effort is irrelevant and impeding the case.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro has operated in the county for more than two decades but is building a new, larger mosque.

Court proceedings to stop the building have been going on since last year.
