MTSU Lady Raiders return home after loss

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - An emotional trip to the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Tournament didn't last long for the lady Blue Raiders.

The Middle Tennessee State University team returned home to Murfreesboro Monday afternoon after losing 77-62 to Arkansas State University  in the first round of the conference tournament.

The team played just days after teammate 21-year-old Tina Stewart was stabbed to death in her off-campus apartment.

Head Coach Rick Insell told Nashville's News 2 the losing effort was still a victory, in honoring Stewart.

"They really did a good job," he said, "They played their hearts out, and all of them had heavy hearts. It was tough, really tough. They were not the same team, but they gave us everything they had."

The Blue Raiders were the top seed in the Sun Belt tournament, but the first round loss leaves their NCAA chances in question.

"We haven't even talked about the NCAA Tournament since last Wednesday in practice. To be honest with you, I haven't even thought about the NCAA Tournament. I'm sure there's still a shot that we could get in. If we do, we'll take it from there," Coach Insell said.

Coach Insell said the entire team will head to Stewart's funeral Saturday in Memphis.

Stewart's 18-year-old roommate, Shanterrica Madden, has been charged with first-degree murder in Stewart's death.
