NASHVILLE, Tenn. – High school girls in Sumner County who could not have afforded prom are getting a chance to go, thanks to the generosity of others.
STARS specialists in five Sumner County high schools have organized a prom dress drive and will donate the dresses to girls would like to go to prom but may need a little help getting there.
Kathleen Griffin is in eleventh grade at Hendersonville High School and like many high school students around the Mid-State, pays for a lot on her own.
"I pay for my car and my insurance," she said. "I'm sure my grandmother will help and that dress just saved her a good $300."
The dress Griffin is talking about was one provided as part of a dress drive by STARS specialists.
The schools teamed up to create a temporary prom dress boutique.
All of the dresses have been donated by students, teachers and local stores in the community.
All a girl has to do is pick out her dress and she gets to take home. There is no cost.
"Finding a dress here takes off a load because dresses now are so expensive now," student volunteer Shannon Williams said.
One of the most exciting parts of prom is the planning part. Prom typically costs girls at least $300 after the dress, hair, accessories, nails and tanning are taken care of.
Griffin is one teen very grateful that some of those costs are not on her shoulders.
She said, "It helps because now I don't have to worry about having to say this to get this done and put back money each time."
The student volunteers said many of the girls shopping have organizers they would have stayed home prom night had it not been for a free dress.
