NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The debate continues on whether or not Tennessee grocery stores should be allowed to sell wine.
Jarron Springer is the President of the Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association. He believes grocery stores should be able to sell wine.
"It's time that this happens in the state of Tennessee and it's important that we show this study there's job creation and there's revenue production for the state," Springer told Nashville's News 2.
On Wednesday, the group released a study which showed selling wine by food retailers could create more than 3,500 jobs.
The study also found liquor stores could see a 5% to 28% drop in sales.
Bard Quillman is owner of Red Dog Wine & Spirits. He told Nashville's News 2 that he is opposed to the idea of grocery stores being allowed to sell wine.
"I would lose at least one employee by doing that, and if you take that through the whole market place, that would be some 500 employees that would be lost," Quillman said.
Quillman said small businesses like his will be getting a smaller share of the wine market, while the number of people buying wine remains the same.
"Who's going to buy all this new wine?" he asked. "We're selling wine in the same market that we would be selling it in before."
This year is the fourth time the state legislature will consider letting food retailers sell wine.
