Historic riverfront building gets new life

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Work is underway to give an historic building along the Cumberland River in downtown Nashville new life.

The old Nashville Bridge Company building, which sits between LP Field and the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge on the river's east bank, has been abandoned since before the Titans stadium was built in the 1990s.

It will soon have a new look and a new purpose.

"The building will contain offices for the Metro Parks Department, it will contain concessions, public restrooms and also as part of this project, we will be connecting the deck of the Shelby Street [pedestrian bridge] directly to the riverbank below," Ed Owens, Waterfront Redevelopment Director for the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency, explained.

The Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency, or MDHA, is overseeing the riverfront development.

The project is designed to pay tribute to the history of the building, which was originally built in 1908 and used to build ships and barges.

"It is one of the few remaining remnants of the east bank's industrial heritage," Owens continued.

The building's new legacy will include solar power and geothermal heating and cooling.

"The building will also serve as a showcase of the cities commitment to green and sustainable construction and development," Owens added.

The project, which also includes a six-and-a-half acre Metro park, is scheduled to be completed by next summer.

"This is all intended to reactivate, kind of re-embrace, rediscover and reactivate the downtown riverfront," Owens said.  "It is to get people to come back down and enjoy the water."
