MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The trial of the Murfreesboro man charged with lying to detectives investigating his wife's disappearance got underway Tuesday in Rutherford County.

Sixty-nine-year-old Marcie Smith disappeared during a shopping trip in early December 2007

Detectives said her husband, Palmer Smith, was not up front with them during the initial investigation and provided misleading information.

He is charged with two counts of fabricating evidence and six counts of filing a false police report.

A jury of six men, eight women and two alternates was seated Tuesday and opening statements got underway.

New details about the cold case are expected to be released over the course of the trial.

Marcie Smith was last seen on December 6, 2007.  Her remains were never found and police still consider her a missing person.

Surveillance video shot that afternoon from the Walmart off Rutherford Boulevard showed her SUV pulling into the parking lot.

A few minutes later, the video shows a man taking a bicycle from the back of the SUV and riding away.  The bicyclist was never identified.

Later that night, at 6:14 p.m., Palmer Smith filed a missing person's report but the case eventually went cold.

One year later, in December 2008, authorities searched a rugged and remote part of Lauderdale County in west Tennessee for clues after Palmer Smith received a mysterious map in the mail.

The map was sent from Memphis and arrived at Palmer Smith's home December 6.  It remains unclear who sent it.

Palmer Smith's trial is expected to last three days.
