NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Voters will fill a west Tennessee state Senate seat Tuesday.

Republican Paul Stanley of Memphis resigned in August 2009 following an alleged extortion plot that revealed an affair he had with a 22-year-old legislative intern.

Stanley stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

A special election will be held Tuesday to determine a replacement to serve out Stanley's remaining term.

Republicans have picked former State House Member Brian Kelsey of Germantown to run for the Memphis-area seat.

Democrat Adrienne Pakis-Gillon is running against Kelsey.

Court records show Stanley, a 47-year-old married father of two, told agents investigating a blackmail case that he had a sexual relationship with McKensie Morrison, a student at Austin Peay State University.

Morrison's boyfriend, Joel Watts, is charged with trying to extort $10,000 from Stanley in exchange for explicit pictures of her that "appeared to be taken in Stanley's apartment."
