Crime on college campuses down, report says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Wednesday released its annual Crime on Campus report which shows a statewide decrease in crimes reported on college campuses for the fourth year in a row.

Overall crime was down 6.4% from 7,371 offenses reported in 2007 to 6,900 offenses in 2008.

Colleges and universities attribute the decrease to heightened measures of security like card readers at building access points, fixed guards at set locations on campus and regular security meetings with students and staff.

Many institutions have also implemented emergency alert systems and crime awareness programs.

Broken down by category, reported rapes dropped from 25 in 2007 to 12 in 2008, fraud decreased 30.2%, the number of DUI arrests increased 19% from 189 to 225 and robbery offenses remained consistent.

The campus crime rate dropped 12.5% from 2006 to 2007 and 1.4% from 2005 to 2006.
