Rutherford Co. students receive free prom dresses

Posted:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - High school girls in Rutherford County shopped for prom dresses on Saturday, free of charge.

The Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro organized the Prom Dress Drive and hopes to make the event an annual tradition.

The group collected nearly 200 new and gently-used prom dresses, as well as shoes.

The program was targeted at Rutherford County public school juniors and seniors who are on the free/reduced lunch program.

Volunteer Claressa Johnson told News 2 that the reaction from many of the girls and their mothers made the project worthwhile.

"After a lady had gotten a dress, she was like ‘we're just so grateful, there's no way we would have been able to afford a dress and a new pair of shoes, because my husband lost his job and I got my hours cut back,'" Johnson said.

Many of the dresses retailed for more than $400.

The group hopes to continue the event next year and possibly expand it to include Davidson County students.
