Doctor uses technology to save patients time

Tired of long waits in the doctor's office?  One Middle Tennessee doctor is now using technology to save his patients time.

Dr. Steve Samudrala is the medical director at America's Family Doctors Clinic.

He is now working from home and still seeing patients, thanks to the Internet.

Patients log onto the Internet and submit information about symptoms, which is sent right to the doctor.

"We can actually do this from our Blackberries as well," Dr. Samudrala explained.  "The screen is obviously a little smaller but it is helpful because when people are sick because they want to get better soon."

Online house calls cost $45 and eliminate the need to be around other sick patients in a doctor's office.

"Especially with kids, to bring their sick kids in to an office and be exposed to other sick people, the online house call helps prevent that," Dr. Samudrala continued.

After reviewing a patient's symptoms, Dr. Samudrala can send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy, which helps eliminate errors and saves time.

"Basically by sending a prescription on a computer or Blackberry, I can send the prescription electronically to the pharmacy so it will be ready and waiting by the time the patient gets there," he said.

Dr. Samudrala has been doing online house calls for four years and thinks the practice will continue to grow as people continue to rely on technology.

Family Practice Partners in Murfreesboro also offers online house calls.
