Survey: Tenn. confident in Obama, worried about economy

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Tennesseans are worried about the economy but have confidence in President Barack Obama, according to a new poll released by MTSU.

Researchers randomly surveyed 629 Tennesseans last month and found 53% have confidence in President Obama, up from the 42% who voted for him just four months ago.

The survey also found the recession hurt two-thirds of Tennesseans financially and 82% are worried about the economy over the next few years.

Tennesseans seem less pleased with state-level political leaders.

Only 34% of those polled approved of how the state legislature is doing, down from 39%.

MTSU has not seen a score that low for state politics since the aftermath of the Operation Tennessee Waltz scandal in 2005.

Gov. Phil Bredesen's approval rating remains a respectably high 52%, although it has dropped from 58% last fall and registers well below his all-time high of 72% in 2004.

As for items on the 2009 legislative agenda, nearly two-thirds of Tennesseans support allowing grocery stores to sell wine, education tops the list of things Tennesseans think state government should spend more money on and most say abortion should be legal under certain circumstances.
