Clarksville attorney secures Senate nomination

Posted: Updated:

Local Democratic Party leaders selected attorney Tim Barnes to run for the State Senate District 22 seat in Clarksville Wednesday night.

Senator Rosalind Kurita beat Clarksville attorney Tim Barnes by 19 votes during the August 7 primary but over the weekend Democratic Party officials tossed out the results after Barnes claimed voter irregularities changed the outcome.

"I am not the one who violated state law by going into a polling place, I am not the one who employed dirty political tricks," he told News 2.  "That created a situation of uncertainty and I availed myself of the statute and went before the primary board."

Senator Kurita denies those allegations saying the election was "stolen" from her.

On Monday, she registered as a write-in candidate and told News 2 she plans to win.

"I do anticipate winning this, this is a very easy thing to do that you push a button and you type it in," she said. "I won and he stole the election, I think that is the issue."

The winner in November will be the area's senator because no Republican is running in November's general election.
