Breeder relinquishes ownership of seized dogs

The breeder of the hundreds of dogs seized from a farm in Hickman County has relinquished ownership.

The nearly 700 dogs, currently in the hands of officers with the Humane Society of the United States, will now be sent to shelters across the nation, and put up for adoption.

Scotlund Haisley, Humane Society of the United States, said, "What that means now is we can now take these animals and place them in permanent, loving homes."

The dogs were seized Wednesday from a 92-acre farm known as Pine Bluff Kennels on Ed Lyell Road in Lyles, about 55 minutes west of Nashville, after they were found to be living in deplorable conditions.

Humane society workers reported some of the worst conditions they have seen.  The dogs were crammed into cages and crates littered with feces, with little or no food and water.

"We could smell the urine, the feces and the death nearly a mile away from the property," said Haisley.

In addition to the hundreds of dogs, several other animals were also seized.

Some were also found dead.

Volunteers spent all day Wednesday and Thursday removing the animals from the farm and taking them to a makeshift shelter not far from the property.

There, the animals will receive the proper care before they are sent to shelters for adoption.

At least two organizations in Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Humane Association and the Hickman County Humane Society, will be receiving some of the rescued dogs.

For information on how you can adopt, call 1-866-304-3352.

The Hickman County Sheriff's Department is also asking individuals wanting to help to drop off dog food, water and bedding at their office at 108 College Avenue Centerville.

Certified veterinarian technicians are also needed to help care for the puppies.  Those who'd like to volunteer should call the Humane Society at 1-866-304-3352.
