NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams announced late Friday afternoon the team will keep Jeff Fisher as its head coach next season.

In a statement released just before 4 p.m., Adams said, "I have informed our senior management that Jeff Fisher will be our head coach next season.  Jeff has meant a great deal to this franchise and we have reached some incredible heights under his leadership."

The statement continued, "Obviously, I have very high expectations for our football team and want to deliver a championship to our fans.  Jeff understands this and shares my expectations. The results of his leadership have been some very good football teams and I believe he will get us back to an elite level."

In a statement, Fisher said he is "pleased with the news."

"Mr. Adams and I had a good talk about where we are as a football team…  Presenting Mr. Adams with his first Lombardi Trophy is still the objective and I will continue to work for that goal," he said.

Adams has stuck with Fisher about three times longer than any other coach he has had since founding the franchise in 1959 and moving to Tennessee in 1997. Fisher has coached 273 games for the team.

Friday's announcement comes just two days after the Titans announced they would release or trade quarterback Vince Young.

Fisher and Young had been at odds with each other since the quarterback injured his thumb in a game against the Washington Redskins in November.

After the game, Young threw his shoulder pads and jersey into the stands.

The quarterback apparently left the stadium after he and Fisher spoke in the locker room in what apparently was a heated discussion, though it is unknown what exactly was said.

"That is between me and him and the team," Fisher has said.  And the Titans aren't talking either.

Despite a losing season and recently releasing Young from the team, Titans' fans are thrilled with Adams' decision to keep Coach Fisher for next season.

"Jeff Fisher is the bread and butter of the Titans he has been here from day one; he will continue to be here.  We all love Jeff Fisher here in Nashville," Titans fan Chuck Hatcher told Nashville's News 2.

Another fan added, "We wish him the best, we're looking forward to a good season next year."
