Construction continues on new Music City Center

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – More than five months after crews broke ground on the new downtown Nashville convention center, News 2 got an exclusive look of the progress inside the construction site of the new Music City Center.

Senior Project and Development Manager Larry Atema told News 2 crews are nearly done with excavation on the 19-acre site.

"We are in the foundation and column phase of the building throughout the site," he said. "We're going to build 1,000 columns to hold this building up."

The $585 million 1.2 million square-foot center is being built just south of the Bridgestone Arean in an area bordered by Demonbreun Street to the north, Korean Veterans Parkway to the south, 5th Avenue to the east and 8th Avenue to the west.

Atema said the convention center will be a 15-story building with a ballroom able to sit 6,000 people and 60 meeting rooms of all different sizes.

He said Sixth Avenue will run directly under the building when the project is finished.

Crews are already working on construction two stories up, as well as starting the utility work inside the building for water, sewer, gas and electric.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced plans last month for Omni Hotels to build an 800-room hotel next to the convention center.

Atema told News 2 the announcement does not come as a surprise.

He was already planning for a hotel.

"We've anticipated a hotel for a long time now, for more than two years," Atema said. "A lot of our planning and detailed utility and infrastructure thinking has already gone into place, and we're ready to execute that when the Omni folks are."

The new facility will replace the current convention center on Lower Broadway.

The Music City Center is scheduled to open in 2013.
