Donelson neighbors receive much needed help

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A pocket of residents in the hard-hit area of Donelson received the help they'd been waiting for on Sunday.

Until Sunday, neighbors living along Meadow Cliff and Lynmeade drives off Lebanon Pike said they hadn't seen the Red Cross, FEMA or media in their area.

"There was nobody down here, no Red Cross, nobody," said volunteer Linda Simpson.  "The people are older, they're desperate.  They need some help."

Resident Susan Speak lost nearly everything in the rising waters.

"We could see the water coming up through the vents in the house so we knew we had to get out," she told News 2. "Everything is gone.  We basically have lost everything."

Fred Smith's brother's home was also flooded.

"All appliances [have to] come out, everything," he said while helping his brother on Sunday.  "It's a mess, it's awful.  [There's] a smell you can't believe."

Until Sunday, the residents had received little help from the outside.

Sunday, however, the Red Cross arrived, unannounced, as if they'd been called.

"We've got to help them, we've got to help them, thank God people are showing up," Simpson said.  "Hopefully they'll keep coming."

Despite the devastation, Speak said she and her neighbors won't give up and will rebuild.

"We can't give up.  We got to keep going," she said.  "It's a good little neighborhood."

Smith agreed, adding, "We're gonna get this house back together, he's gonna be back in.  It's just going to take some time."

As of Sunday, 42 Tennessee counties including Davidson had been declared disaster areas.

Those in need of disaster assistance and in one of the approved counties should register with FEMA at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.
