Lebanon woman gives birth in minivan

LEBANON, Tenn. – It was a virtually pain free delivery, what the family had prayed for, but not when they planned for.

Nathan Adkisson, Kelli and Bill Adkisson's fourth child, was born late last Thursday night in the back of the family's minivan.

The Lebanon couple was in route to Nashville's Baptist Hospital shortly after 11 p.m. when Kelli's water broke.

"She is in the back seat, you know unbelted in a different position than normal," Bill Adkisson recalled.  "I was thinking the whole time, 'Great, I am going to get to deliver this child.'  I was excited about doing it."

Kelli told her husband to pull over and he did the first chance he could.

Kelli, however, had already done all the work.

"My water broke.  I said my water broke I need to push and a cry and it happened that fast," she recalled.

"I opened the door and said, 'how can I help' and she said politely, 'Close the door it is 17-degrees outside'," Bill added.

Bill said he got back into the van and drove to a nearby hospital in Lebanon.

While nurses came outside to help, they still let him cut the umbilical cord.

"My wife said, 'Well, he's cut the cord on the other three so let him in,' so I climbed in and snipped the cord on Nathan," Bill said.

Doctors at the hospital examined Kelli and Nathan and sent them home the next day.

Kelli said she plans to ask for an itemized bill to make sure she isn't billed for Nathan's delivery.
