Metro to enforce parking meters on Saturdays

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It will no longer be free to park at meters in downtown Nashville on Saturdays beginning next year.

The Metro Traffic and Parking Commission voted Monday to enforce parking meters in the area bordered by Broadway, Rosa Parks, Second Avenue and James Robertson from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

The meters are currently not enforced after 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and on Saturdays and Sundays.

Officials hope the enforcement increases parking spot turnover.

Industry wide, the standard for available parking spaces is 15%, or an 85% occupancy rate.

Metro Public Works spokesperson Gwen Hopkins-Glascock says in Nashville, particularly in the downtown area and on the weekends, the occupancy rate is "anywhere from 95% to 100%", meaning "none are available."

“We have a lot of visitors coming into Nashville and typically visitors drive to the front door and look for a place to park and we're hoping that the people who live [in Nashville] and work [in Nashville] use the garages because they know where there at,” said Mark Macy, Metro Public Works’ Director of Engineering.

With the added enforcement, the city stands to make more than $30,000 a month.

It begins in January 2010.
