Rutherford Co. offers H1N1 shot, mist to residents

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Rutherford County residents lined up to get vaccinated against the H1N1 flu virus Monday.

A clinic at the county’s health department, offering both the H1N1 shot and FluMist, opened at 8 a.m.

Most in line Monday morning were families with young children, like Angela Hollins, who brought her three grandchildren.

Her four-month-old twin grandbabies aren’t old enough to get the vaccine themselves so she opted to get protected herself.

“I figured if we're all protected maybe it would be less likely that they would get it,” she told News 2.

Her two-year-old grandson is eligible and received the H1N1 shot.

Hollins admits at first, she did have concerns about getting the new vaccine.

“There's always concern but I figured better be safe than sorry I mean, I figure they've done enough testing and stuff on it or they wouldn't be letting people get it,” she said.

While Rutherford County has both the H1N1 shot and FluMist, the health department is encouraging healthy individuals between the ages of two and 49 to receive the mist to keep the shot in supply.

A second clinic is planned for Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rutherford County Health Department located at 100 West Burton Street in Murfreesboro.

Health officials said they are still trying to make sure high priority groups such as pregnant women, people who care for young children and those with chronic health problems, get the vaccine first.
