Jessica Willett has loved Garth Brooks since she was a little girl.
Garth Brooks announced last month he is coming out of retirement and will play several shows at the Wynn in Las Vegas.
RUTHERFORD CO., Tenn. - Ever since she was a little girl, Jessica Willett has loved Garth Brooks.
Willett has Spina Bifida and for Christmas, her mother planned to purchase tickets to one of his newly-announced shows at the Wynn in Las Vegas.
When the tickets went on sale, Penny Eller began dialing.
Armed with two phones, Eller spent four hours on the phone attempting to get through to the Wynn's box office.
When she finally did, she ordered four tickets.
By mistake, the box office charged her for 16 tickets totaling $2,288 instead of four for $572.
The mistake temporarily froze her account and by the time the Wynn and her bank straightened out the matter, the show was sold out.
"The sales rep at the Wynn box office made a costly mistake," said a disappointed Eller. "She overcharged my account $1,500. Once they realized the mistake, they reimbursed my money, but they said, ‘Sorry we don't have any Garth Brooks tickets for you.'"
Darnette Leavell is Jessica's longtime caregiver and told News 2 seeing Garth Brooks is something Willett deserves.
"I think it's horrible, Jessica doesn't ask for much. She was so hurt, when she learned she won't get to go. I am heartbroken. It hurts me. She is a really happy young lady. The one thing she wanted the most. I am very hurt for her. Yes it is a mistake but if she doesn't see her hero it is more than a mistake," Leavell said.
After interviewing the family, "Messed Up" called the Wynn's public relations department.
They immediately sensed the gravity of the mistake and began working to correct it.
After a few days they were able to find four tickets for the family in the orchestra pit and they plan to offer them at no cost.
A spokeswoman at the Wynn said demand for tickets to see Garth Brooks has been overwhelming.
She said in just a few hours the box office took 140,000 calls and the Web site saw close to five million hits.
The hotel said they are correcting the glitch and more Garth Brooks shows are planned for the future.
An elated Eller said she has already purchased plane tickets and while in Vegas, the family plans to stay at the Wynn.
