Dentist office offers to buy candy back

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It's trick or treat with a twist at one Nashville dentist's office.

Dr. Jack Fletcher and his partners are buying back the candy children collected on their Halloween rounds.

The payoff is $1 a pound.

Joe Bayless likes the idea of cashing in his candy.

"You can save this and buy different stuff than just candy," said the 10-year-old.

He walked away with $7 and a gift certificate for a meal at a popular hamburger restaurant.

"Candy's okay in moderation but what tends to happen is children don't [eat] it in moderation and you can break a tooth, you can get a lot of cavities in the teeth where that sugar just sits and rots the tooth out," Dr. Doug Holliday told News 2.

Melissa Wyatt's three-year-old traded in her candy Monday.

"She got to eat some candy on Saturday so she understands and she enjoyed it then and we're glad to pass it on," Wyatt said.

All the candy collected at the Edmonson Pike dentist office through Thursday will be sent to soldiers in Iraq.

They'll get a little taste of Halloween from home, and candy to share with the children they meet during their deployment overseas.

In addition to the cash for candy, the gift certificates and the shipment to the soldiers, the doctors will be matching dollar for dollar the amount collected with a check to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

The buy back continues during office hours through Thursday at Dr. Fletcher, Dr. Otterpohl and Dr. Holliday's office at 5505 Edmondson Pike, Suite 201.
