Donyel Brown is charged with knowingly exposing her boyfriend to HIV.
Clarksville Police Office Jim KnollCLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Police have arrested 30-year-old Donyel Da'Shawn Brown for knowingly exposing her boyfriend to HIV for years.
It is only the second time Clarksville police have arrested a person and charged them with criminal exposure to HIV.
Clarksville police spokesperson Jim Knoll told News 2 that "we received a call to the residence that he found out that she was infected with HIV and he said he didn't know about it."
Knoll said that Brown's boyfriend of four years made the discovery this week when, "he found medication, found a label, he called someone and found out exactly what that label on that medication was."
The label, say police, was medication commonly taken by those who are HIV positive.
Knowingly exposing someone to HIV did not become a crime until 1994.
The actual transmission of HIV does not have to happen for a person to be convicted.
Brown was immediately arrested and charged with criminal exposure to HIV, a Class C Felony.
She is currently being held in the Montgomery County jail on a $1 million bond.
