NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Father Ryan High School finally has the home field advantage.
The school's football team played its first home football game Friday night against Hillwood and defeated the Hilltoppers 42-0.
It's the first time in the school's 84 year history Father Ryan has had its very own home field.
"Eighty-four years without a home field, long time, long wait, it is good to be Irish today and home at last," said head coach Bruce Lussier.
Football fans arrived early on Friday to grab a seat at the new Giacosa Stadium.
The field is made of artificial turf, the same surface that professional football players use.
It is designed to withstand the rugged use by Father Ryan's athletic department.
"The nice thing is now, you come back the next day and it is not worn out. It is ready to go again," Lussier said.
If it rains, the field drains quickly and it feels like you're walking on a real grass because its contents are a mixture sand and rubber pellets.
The new stadium has a bit of the past as well.
The school's original floor crest, used in 1960s at the original Elliston Place campus, sits just off the field.
