Remington College offers free haircuts for kids

The beginning of the school year can be an expensive time for parents with school supplies and new clothes, but this year, a local college is taking care of one back-to-school essential free of charge.

For the next two weeks, the student salon at Remington College's Nashville campus will give free haircuts for school kids through its "Cuts for Kids" program.

Cosmetology Department Chair Regina Wade said she hopes the program alleviates some stress for parents.

"With all the school supplies that they have to buy, it is nice to have a free haircut. They need it," Wade said.

Students at Remington College learn to cut hair in class and then get hands on experience in the salon, since it's open to the public.

Wade said, "They all have had at least 375 hours of training before we bring them out here on the salon floor."

The college is offering free haircuts for school kids to give back to the community and help families out during the recession.

"With the economy the way it is, we just wanted to give back a little something so we are offering complementary haircuts for any child under 17," she said.

Becky La Grand brought her two kids in for free haircuts Wednesday, and she says that saves her about $25 she normally spends on cuts.

Remington College began offering free haircuts on Tuesday, and it will continue through August 15.

Even though the cuts are free, Wade recommends parents still make appointments for their children.

"It is first come first serve basis, and we are limited on our students that we have on the salon floor on a daily basis," she said.

The students at Remington College are happy to help to ensure area school kids will look good on their first day of school.

The college is also offering half off many of its services for adults.

Remington College is located at 441 Donelson Pike, just north of the Nashville International Airport and Interstate 40.
