Training center to offer green curriculum to electricians

Posted: Updated:

Area electrical workers now have a place to study new green technology, and insure their value in tomorrow's workforce.

As Tennessee works to attract energy-based industry, and more buildings go up with a green theme, jobs for trained technicians will become more in demand.

The concern is that with the growing popularity of solar and wind power, there aren't enough people with the expertise to do the work, and do it right.

To help meet the demand, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has developed curriculum to bring electricians and apprentices up to speed on new technology.

Contractor Steven Turner said, "With anything in technology and electronics, you're going to have to stay on the cutting edge, and whatever direction the market is going in, that's the direction that you need to be headed in."

So, the Nashville Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (NEJATC) plans to begin teaching the new in-depth green curriculum.

NEJATC held an open house to celebrate the upcoming classes Friday.

Congressman Jim Cooper called it the ticket to the American dream. "It's a ticket to the future and we need more of this," said Cooper.

The first green job classes for electricians and apprentices will begin at NEJATC later this summer.

NEJATC is located at 310 Fesslers Lane.

Visit NEJATC's Web site for more information on classes.
