Tornado cleanup has cost Murfreesboro more than $8 million

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Rutherford County and the city of Murfreesboro have spent an estimated $8.3 million cleaning up after the Good Friday tornadoes of April 10, 2009.

Murfreesboro's costs include overtime pay, contract labor, equipment, and materials.

An EF-4 tornado with winds of 170 miles-per-hour completely destroyed 81 houses in the city and damaged nearly 200 homes.

The tornado caused more than $41 million worth of damage.

If the event meets certain requirements, the federal government will reimburse the local government 75% of their costs.
