A new Lowe's store has opened its doors in northeast Nashville, creating nearly 200 jobs for Davidson County.
The new store, located at 3460 on Dickerson Pike, unofficially opened to customers at 6 a.m. Friday. It will bring 175 new jobs to the area.
The new opening is good news, considering some businesses are being forced to close in the down economy and the county's unemployment rate increased to 8.4% in February.
Store Manager Dale Johnson said the new store is a great thing for the community's unemployed.
"It gave us a great opportunity to try to help the community and the people that have been seeking employment for a while and it's very rewarding to be able to bring some people in and give their families something that they can count on," he told News 2.
Johnson said the store opened on Dickerson Road because of the potential for future growth in the area, as well as many other factors.
Merchants and neighbors hope the new store will help upgrade the image of the Dickerson Road area.
The Dickerson Road Merchants Association has pushed to bring in new businesses.
Earlier this month, crews began $1 million upgrade to add street lights and sidewalks and repair existing walkways.
The new Lowe's store will have a grand opening celebration next Thursday, April 2.
On that day the store will match any gift card purchase with a donation to Habitat for Humanity.
