Peter Konrad, M.D., Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Biomedical Engineering
Director of Functional Neurosurgery
Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Dr. Konrad's patient care emphasis is in all areas of functional Neurosurgery with special emphasis on surgical treatment of movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease, tremor, dystonia and spasticity), epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and neuropathic pain. He also performs routine neurosurgery.  Other clinical interests of his are Deep Brain Stimulation, Computer Assisted Surgery and Neural Prosthesis.


  • Dr. Konrad received his MD degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN in 1991.  He received his PhD degree from Purdue University in 1988.

Postgraduate Training:

  • Dr. Konrad completed his internship training in General Surgery at Indiana University in 1992.  He continued his residency training in Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center between 1992 and 1997.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Dr. Konrad is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and the Congress for Neurological Surgeons.

Research Interests:

  • Development of Neurophysiological Atlas
  • Use of optic energy for neural stimulation
  • Clinical Neurophysiology; Motor Systems
  • Neurosurgical Instrumentation
