A housekeeper found the body of 44-year-old James Cannon in an upstairs closet of his Bowling Avenue home Monday morning.
Autopsy reports show Cannon was strangled to death.
Police are treating his death as a homicide, but have not named a suspect in the case.
Friends of Cannon's said he loved life.
"He was at the top of his game...He was really enjoying life," said longtime friend John Hollins Jr. "...He was a good father, a good husband. He was at peace with what he was doing. He finally said, ‘I feel better than I have for five years.'"
Cannon was going through contentious divorce.
In addition to being his friend, Hollins was his divorce lawyer.
In the Divorce Complaint filed in court, Hollins claimed his "wife physically assaulted him on more than one occasion" and in an Emergency Motion for Temporary Injunction, claimed his wife, 41-year-old Kelley Cannon, "attempted to stab the husband with a knife when she was in an intoxicated psychotic episode."
Through it all, Hollins believes James Cannon still loved his wife, and wanted her to get help.
"He didn't want a divorce," he told News 2.
After James Cannons' body was discovered, police found the couple's three children, aged nine, seven, and 18 months, with their mother in her home, although court prohibited contact.
"At the time Jim was killed she was no supposed to have access to the house or the children," said Hollins.
The couple was last seen together with the children Sunday night at James Cannon's Bowling Avenue home.
Cannon was an attorney and partner at Medical Reimbursements of America, located in Franklin.
