MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee State University has declared their star quarterback ineligible for competition but will be seeking his reinstatement.

The suspension comes after Dwight Dasher failed to repay a large sum of money he borrowed from Oliver Donnell, an elderly hospital patient.

Donnell told News 2 he made three loans to Dasher totaling $1,500 for the quarterback to play poker and Friday was the deadline for repayment.

In a statement issued Friday, MTSU Athletic Director Chris Massaro said because Dasher is a football player, accepting the loan is in violation of the NCAA amateurism legislation.

"He's received a loan of $1,500 that both people have said the reason he got the loan is because he's a football player," he said.  "Would he have received this loan if he were not a football player?  If that were true, then there would not be an NCAA violation."

Massaro said a typical suspension for such violation is a 30% reduction in the number of games in a season, but can be more or less.

Police have not charged Dasher with anything and the university will be seeking his reinstatement

In the meantime, Dasher will be allowed to practice but will more than likely miss the first few games.

MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill said Dasher knows he made a mistake and will learn from it.

"Dwight has learned from this and will be a better man, not a better football quarterback, but a better man because of this," he said.

Dasher led the Blue Raiders to a 10-3 record last season and a set a bowl rushing record with 201 yards rushing.

The Blue Raiders open the season September 2 at home against Minnesota.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN-U.
