Gaylord Opryland set to reopen on schedule, buys new land

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In about three months, the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center is expected to open for business for the first time since the floods.

CEO Colin Reed said in a press conference Thursday the Grand Ole Opry House is on schedule to reopen in early October, and the Opryland Hotel is expected to reopen November 15.

Reed said, "I really do think this hotel is going to be so much better than it was. The physical qualities of this hotel are going to be fabulous, and that's what I'm looking forward to."

Former employees at the hotel and convention center can start applying for their old jobs starting this weekend.

A job fair will be held Sunday for former employees.

Gaylord officials expect 80% of the 1,700 employees who were laid off in June will return to the resort.

If former employees do not fill the staff, a job fair will be held for the public in September.

There is also some speculation about what Gaylord might do with some newly purchased land just across Briley Parkway from Opryland.

Gaylord purchased the 13 acres from Two Rivers Baptist Church for $3 million.

"The church wanted to sell it," Reed said, "and we felt it was a decent piece of real estate that sits contiguous to 110 acres we have on Briley."

Company officials plan to decide later what to do with the land but laughed off rumors of a new theme park.
