Fans pay respects to slain quarterback at LP Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - At least 9,000 fans have paid their respects to former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair throughout Wednesday and Thursday at LP Field.

An estimated 500 people were coming through the gate each hour Thursday afternoon.

McNair, who retired from the NFL in April 2008, was found shot to death Saturday at the age of 36.

Police on Wednesday ruled his death a murder-suicide and said his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, was responsible.

Before the gates opened at 9 a.m. Wednesday, fans were already lined up, some waiting for over an hour for the chance to sign their name in a playbook, look at pictures of their hero and watch a video montage of McNair.

For many, the trip to LP Field is their chance to mourn the loss of McNair, revisit some of their favorite memories and pay tribute.

Katie Taylor told News 2, "I felt like his life was cut short so quickly and so tragically."

"I think it was an opportunity for us to mourn and pay our respects and let him know there are a lot of people in Tennessee that loved him," said Hannah Garrett.

Besides the playbook that will be filled with signatures and messages, a giant collage of McNair's pictures displayed at LP Field will be presented to McNair's family.

Edwin Harrison said, "It's so sad, something like that had to happen to a great person who's done so much for the community."

"You can revisit the memories on the field, where so many good memories came from the Sundays that he played here," recalled Mike Clark.  "We'll always miss you."

Fans can visit LP Field and pay their respects to the McNair family until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Fans can park for free in parking lot C and enter through Gate 1.

Besides signing a book, viewing pictures and watching a video, they can also choose to make donations to the Steve McNair Foundation at the ticket office.

Donations can also be made on the foundation's Web site.
