Local governments consider ban on guns in parks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Metro Council in Nashville and Murfreesboro's city council are both considering an ordinance to ban guns in parks before a new state law allowing guns in parks takes effect in the fall.

The new state law will take effect in September, but under that law, city governments can pass an ordinance banning guns from some or all of their parks.

Nashville's Metro Council is set to consider banning guns from all the city's parks next month.

Pat Buckley is a parent who hopes the Metro Council bans guns from parks.

"Who wants a gun anywhere around here with children in the park?" he asked.

Laura Scott visits Fannie Mae Dees Park near Hillsboro Village with her two-year-old and eight-month-old children.

"I just wouldn't be comfortable knowing that [guns are] allowed at parks where young children are," she said.

John Harris, an attorney and the Executive Director for the Tennessee Firearms Association, said no there are no statistics to back up the claim that people are more likely to get hurt if guns are present.

He said permit holders have a right to carry.

"Permit holders have gone through full FBI background checks, they've gone and taken classes and been trained," said Harris.  "They've been taught they're not police.  They're not vigilantes. This is self defense as a last resort."

Buckley said guns, no matter who is carrying them, would make parks less safe.

"Responsible or not, guns are lethal, period," Buckley argued.  "They should they have no place in a public space."

The city of Hendersonville approved its park gun ban last week.

The state law allowing carry permit holders to bring guns into parks goes into effect September 1.
