Mayor sees Greer Stadium renovations, first hand

Nashville Mayor Dean Nashville Mayor Dean

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean toured a newly renovated Greer Stadium on Monday.

The Nashville Sounds' home season opener is next Thursday, and fans will notice some big changes this season.

A newly added customer service area impressed the Nashville mayor, as did the updated restrooms.

The AAA baseball team's new owners also added a new sound system, new seats, a new infield and new lights in the guitar-shaped scoreboard.

They also increased the ballpark's wheelchair accessibility.

Mayor Dean said, "They put more money in this project as they were required under the lease."

Sounds COO Frank Ward said they updated the stadium for the fans, and need the fans to come back.

"... I've been saying for awhile, I love baseball, Nashville loves baseball and baseball will thrive in this city," said Dean.  "What we needed was the right partner."

Things are going so smoothly between the mayor's office and the new owners, there is again talk of a new downtown stadium.

"I do have a strong held belief that a downtown stadium would be good for our city," said the mayor, adding they will likely begin discussions "relatively soon."

Opening Day is set for next Thursday, April 9.  Mayor Dean is throwing the first pitch.
