Glenn Truelove with Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors said he recognizes that not everyone can attend a loved one's funeral as they are often times spur of the moment and decided to host the services online.

He said the Web cast can either be available for all to see or, at the family's request, be on a secure, password-protected page.

The funeral home will also keep the cyber service on its Web site for 30 days.

"I know that we have people from all over the country that visit our Web site, that are native or Maury Countians at heart and grew up here, and see some of their friends and families that may have died and we have it where they can send a note to the family at that time, and now they can be a part of the funeral service too," Truelove said.

When Oakes and Nichols first opened in Columbia people came to funerals by horse and buggy.

Now, more than 150 years later, they can attend with the click of a mouse.

Oakes and Nichols broadcast its first webcast Thursday.  Among those viewing over the internet was a girl in Peru who once lived with the family as a foreign exchange student.
