Richard HolmanA Putnam County man is behind bars, charged in the rape of his girlfriend's three-month-old baby boy.
Richard Holman, 24, of Sparta, was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated rape of a child and aggravated child abuse.
Police first began investigating the couple in November when they called to report the infant was not breathing.
The child was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where doctors struggled to save his life.
He had a broken leg, injuries to his rectum and internal injuries that required surgery.
He remained in the hospital for several weeks.
The child's mother was also placed under arrest Monday, charged with aggravated child neglect or endangerment and aggravated assault by failure to protect the child.
Police said the baby is recovering and is now in the custody of his biological father.
Both Holman and the baby's mother remain in the Putnam County jail on $200,000 bond each.
They are scheduled to appear in court in January.
